Getting to Know Rishikesh

Rishikesh sits where the Ganges emerges from the Himalayan foothills, turns south into the plains, and is flanked on both sides by forested ridges. It is simultaneously one of Hinduism's most sacred sites, the global headquarters of yoga and spiritual tourism, and the adventure capital of North India — a combination that makes it unlike anywhere else.

The Beatles came here in 1968 to study with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and made it globally famous. The ashrams they stayed at (the Maharishi's complex, now largely abandoned and covered in graffiti murals, is one of Rishikesh's more atmospheric off-trail sights) drew a wave of spiritual seekers that never entirely ebbed. Today, Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula — two pedestrian suspension bridges over the Ganges — are the spiritual and social centres, lined with ashrams, yoga centres, Ayurvedic clinics, rooftop cafes, and the constant sound of bells and bhajans.

The Parmarth Niketan hosts a Ganga Aarti every evening at sunset — priests in orange robes waving flaming lamps to the sound of drums and conch shells, as the river turns golden. For all the tourists, it remains an authentically devotional event.

For adventure: the rafting corridor between Shivpuri and Rishikesh is one of Asia's finest day trips. The bungee jump at Mohan Chatti is among India's most thrilling. The 26km trek up to Kunjapuri temple for sunrise over the Himalayan panorama is completely free and extraordinary.

Practical Tips

🌦️
Best Season

March–June is excellent before monsoon — rhododendrons bloom, trekking begins, and the Char Dham shrines open. September–November is arguably the best all-round — brilliant visibility, golden light, and the post-monsoon Valley of Flowers in full glory. Avoid July–August for trekking (heavy rain, landslides) except the Valley of Flowers which peaks precisely then.

🚌
Getting There

Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) is the main gateway — flights from Delhi and Mumbai. Haridwar and Kathgodam (for Nainital/Kumaon) have good train connections from Delhi. For Kedarnath and the Char Dham, helicopter services operate from Phata and Sirsi in season.

🧘
Rishikesh Tip

Rishikesh is overwhelming in its variety of yoga, meditation and wellness offerings — from 10-day Vipassana retreats to weekend drop-in yoga classes to world-famous teachers. The Parmarth Niketan Ganga Aarti at sunset is a genuinely moving experience even for secular travellers. Spend at least 3 nights to feel the city's rhythm.

📱
Connectivity

Get an Airtel or Jio SIM on arrival — both have good coverage across Uttarakhand. Google Maps works reliably; download offline maps for remote areas before you leave cities.

💰
Budget

India offers extraordinary value. A mid-range daily budget of ₹3,000–5,000 (approximately $35–60 USD) covers comfortable accommodation, excellent food, and transport. UPI payment is now universal — keeping a small amount of cash for local markets and rural areas is wise.
