The Maldives has a reputation for being unapproachably expensive — and it can be. But we spent 5 nights here and came back with memories worth every rupee, having been much smarter about where we stayed and how we moved between atolls.
Days 1–2 are free to read. The full guide (Days 3–5, resort recommendations at different price points, speedboat vs seaplane breakdown, and our honest budget) is coming as a digital download.
Malé → Resort Transfer
Land at Velana International and clear immigration quickly — it's refreshingly efficient. Your resort's speedboat will be waiting. The 45-minute crossing across turquoise shallows is the moment you realise you've actually made it. Afternoon by the water, sunset from your overwater villa deck.
House Reef & Sandbank
Most resorts have a house reef accessible directly from the jetty. We snorkelled for two hours before breakfast — manta rays and reef sharks before 8am. Afternoon: ask the resort to arrange a sandbank excursion. Just you, a picnic basket, and a strip of sand in the middle of the ocean.
Dolphin Cruise & Dive
Sunrise dolphin cruise at 6am — spinner dolphins near the channel. First dive or discover scuba session in the afternoon.
Local Island & Departure
Visit a local island for a fraction of resort prices — fish market, tea shops, authentic Maldivian food. Final morning in the water before transfer back to Malé.
