Sri Lanka doesn't do subtle. Within a single day you can move from ancient rock fortresses to turquoise reef-filled waters, from mist-wrapped highland train carriages to colonial streets smelling of cinnamon. It's a country that packs an almost implausible range of landscapes and experiences into an island you can cross in five hours.
This is our actual route — a 10-day loop from Colombo that hits the cultural triangle, the east coast's best snorkelling, the hill country's famous train ride, and the wild southern shores at sea-turtle nesting season. It's a circuit that rewards early mornings and some deliberate pacing.

Land at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer into the city — allow 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. The evening is yours: a walk along Galle Face Green at sunset over the Indian Ocean sets the tone perfectly. Colombo's seafront esplanade is one of those rare city spaces that actually delivers on its promise. Dinner at Ministry of Crab (Sri Lanka's most celebrated restaurant, book ahead) or Nuga Gama for a more traditional village-style meal.

Drive 3.5 to 4 hours north toward Sigiriya, stopping en route at Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage site carved into a dramatic hillside, housing over 150 Buddha statues across five cave shrines. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours; dress modestly and note that tickets are purchased 400m down the main road from the Golden Temple entrance. Dambulla opens at 7:00 AM — time your drive to arrive mid-morning for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Check in at your Sigiriya guesthouse early and rest well. Tomorrow begins at 4:30 AM.

Up at 4:30 AM. The gate to Pidurangala opens at 5:00 AM — arrive right at opening. The 20 to 30 minute climb through Buddhist temple ruins and a rocky scramble leads to a summit with one of Sri Lanka's finest views: Lion Rock (Sigiriya) catching the first light with jungle spreading endlessly below. Rated 4.8/5 by over 10,000 visitors for good reason — don't let an early alarm stop you. By 7:30 AM you're done and ahead of the day. Drive 3 to 3.5 hours east to Trincomalee on the Indian Ocean coast.

Be at the Nilaveli Beach ticket counter by 8:00 AM — Pigeon Island entry is capped and spots go fast, at around USD 40 for foreign visitors. A 15-minute boat ride brings you to the island's clear reef waters where black-tip reef sharks glide in the shallows and sea turtles cruise past snorkellers. Allow 2 to 3 hours total. In the afternoon, unwind at Nilaveli Beach — white sand, calm turquoise water — or stroll Koneswaram Temple on its dramatic clifftop above the Indian Ocean. For dinner, head south to Uppuveli Beach, which has a livelier restaurant strip than Nilaveli.
Trincomalee → Nuwara Eliya · May 26 · Monday
A 4.5 to 5.5 hour drive south and upward into the central highlands, with a stop in Kandy — Sri Lanka's second city and the cultural capital. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the island's most important Buddhist site, housing a relic of the Buddha brought from India in the 4th century. Allow up to 1.5 hours; dress modestly. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya in the evening: this British hill-station town sits at 1,868 metres, with a distinctly different climate and feel from the coast. Stroll Gregory Lake at dusk and have tea at a lakeside café — you're in Sri Lanka's tea country now.

Leave by 6:00 AM for the 45-minute drive to Horton Plains National Park — the earlier you arrive, the clearer the views before highland mist rolls in. The 9km loop trail takes you through misty cloud forest to World's End, a sheer cliff with a near-vertical 880m drop and views to the southern coast on clear mornings. Baker's Falls rounds out the circuit. Aim to reach World's End by 7:30–8:00 AM at the latest. Back in the afternoon, visit Pedro Estate or Mackwoods Labookellie — both offer tea factory tours (45–60 minutes, almost free) with freshly-brewed Ceylon tea overlooking rolling green hills. One of the most authentic experiences in this region — don't skip it.
Nuwara Eliya → Ella · May 28 · Wednesday
Drive 20 to 30 minutes to Nanu Oya Station and board the 12:40 PM train to Ella — widely considered one of the world's most scenic rail journeys. For three hours, tea plantations, misty valleys, and colonial-era viaducts roll past the window as the train winds through the highlands. In Ella that evening, time a visit to Nine Arch Bridge to coincide with a train crossing — the 6:04 PM departure from Ella station makes for golden-hour light on the bridge. Café hop along Ella's compact main strip for dinner.
Ella → Tangalle · May 29 · Thursday
Start with an easy 45-minute hike up Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views across Ella's valleys before the drive south. No scrambling required — it's a relaxed morning opener. Drive 3.5 to 4.5 hours to Tangalle on the southern coast. The coastline here is dramatic and wild — sunset beach walks are extraordinary. And May is prime sea-turtle nesting season: ask your accommodation about guided turtle nesting walks on the beach. Completely free and unforgettable.
Tangalle → Colombo · May 30 · Friday
A relaxed morning: walk the beach at dawn with one last chance to spot nesting turtles, read, and ease into the final day. Late morning departure for the 3.5 to 4.5 hour drive back to Colombo. A final dinner in the capital to celebrate the trip — and a last evening stroll on Galle Face Green if time allows before tomorrow's departure.

Ocean Currents
The south coast (Tangalle) has strong currents in May and is not suitable for swimming. The east coast (Nilaveli, Uppuveli) is calm and safe during this period.
