Getting to Know Bengaluru (Bangalore)
Bengaluru is a city of contradictions — traffic that would make Mumbai shudder, air that smells of jasmine from street-corner flower sellers, and a culinary scene that could hold its own against any major world city. The old Pete neighbourhood around City Market and the Vidhana Soudha district carry the weight of a very different Bangalore — the Garden City of the British era, full of wide avenues and colonial bungalows now hemmed in by glass tech campuses.
For food, Vidyarthi Bhavan in Basavanagudi has been serving the same perfect masala dosas since 1943. For craft beer and modern Indian food, Indiranagar and Koramangala are the epicentres. The city's art scene is serious — the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Bengaluru International Arts Festival are genuinely worth your time.
From Bengaluru, day trips to Nandi Hills (a gorgeous colonial-era hill station), Mysore (3 hours), and Bheemeshwari on the Cauvery River are all very manageable.
Practical Tips
October to February brings cool, dry weather ideal for exploring. Avoid March–May for interior areas — it gets very hot. Monsoon (June–September) is magical in Coorg but some roads wash out.
Karnataka is best explored by a mix of train and self-drive or private car. Bengaluru has good metro connectivity; for Coorg, Hampi and the coast, hiring a car or taking an overnight train is best.
Don't leave without eating Udupi cuisine — dosas, idlis and sambar at their absolute finest. Try Bisi Bele Bath, Ragi Mudde, and the extraordinary seafood on the coast. In Bengaluru, the craft beer and restaurant scene is world-class.
Get an Airtel or Jio SIM on arrival — both have good coverage across Karnataka. Google Maps works reliably; download offline maps for remote areas before you leave cities.
India offers extraordinary value. A mid-range daily budget of ₹3,000–5,000 (approximately $35–60 USD) covers comfortable accommodation, excellent food, and transport. UPI payment is now universal — keeping a small amount of cash for local markets and rural areas is wise.
