About Karnataka

Karnataka is India's eighth-largest state by area and one of its most diverse — a place where the cosmopolitan energy of Bengaluru gives way within hours to misty coffee estates, tiger reserves, UNESCO-listed ruins and an extraordinarily long coastline along the Arabian Sea.

The state was home to powerful dynasties — the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Wodeyars of Mysore — and their legacy is written in stone across the landscape. The Hampi ruins, the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebid, and the opulent Mysore Palace are among the finest historical monuments in India.

But Karnataka isn't just about history. Coorg (Kodagu) is India's coffee heartland, a misty upland district that produces over 30% of the country's coffee, draped in cardamom-scented air and home to the warrior Kodava community. The coast — Udupi, Mangalore, Gokarna — offers a slower, more authentic flavour of beach life than Goa, with remarkable Tulu Nadu cuisine and clifftop temples perched above the sea.

For wildlife, Nagarhole and Bandipur national parks together form one of the largest tiger reserves in Asia. Kabini River, threading between the two parks, is one of the best places in India to see elephants, leopards and wild dogs in a single afternoon drive.

Practical Tips

🌦️
Best Season

October to February brings cool, dry weather ideal for exploring. Avoid March–May for interior areas — it gets very hot. Monsoon (June–September) is magical in Coorg but some roads wash out.

🚗
Getting Around

Karnataka is best explored by a mix of train and self-drive or private car. Bengaluru has good metro connectivity; for Coorg, Hampi and the coast, hiring a car or taking an overnight train is best.

🍽️
Food

Don't leave without eating Udupi cuisine — dosas, idlis and sambar at their absolute finest. Try Bisi Bele Bath, Ragi Mudde, and the extraordinary seafood on the coast. In Bengaluru, the craft beer and restaurant scene is world-class.

💰
Budget

Karnataka suits every budget. Hampi has excellent cheap guesthouses; Coorg has beautiful homestays; Bengaluru has everything from backpacker hostels to five-star properties.

🎭
Culture

The Mysore Dasara festival (October) is one of India's most spectacular royal celebrations — the palace is illuminated with 100,000 lightbulbs and the procession is unforgettable. Book accommodation months in advance.
