The Itinerary — Msanii Africa Safaris
Swahili Beachfront Resort
📍 Diani Beach, Coast Province, Kenya
Diani Beach was the revelation of this trip — we genuinely hadn't expected Kenya's coast to be this beautiful. The twin resorts (Sea Resort and Sea Lodge, operated by the same group) are all-inclusive and sit right on an almost absurdly white strip of beach facing the Indian Ocean. The Swahili architectural character is the real differentiator: carved wood, dhow-inspired arches, and the kind of considered design you only find when someone cares about place as much as product. Sundowners with the ocean turning gold remain among our favourite travel memories.
Which to Choose?
Both are operated by the same group and share the beach. The itinerary listed either/or based on availability — the distinctions are subtle. The Resort tends to be slightly larger and more structured; the Lodge has a more intimate, boutique feel. If available, the Lodge is our preference. Both are excellent.

Safari Lodge — Full Board
📍 Masai Mara National Reserve, Narok County
This is where the trip becomes unforgettable. Jambo Mara Lodge sits within the reserve — not near it, inside it. Your night sounds include the distant calls of hyena and the occasional proximity of elephants. The lodge is full-board, which makes complete sense here: you're far from any town, and the food is genuinely good. Day 4 was a full-day game drive tracking the Big 5 with a picnic lunch served under a lone tree at the heart of the reserve. The optional hot air balloon ride at $390/person is one of the genuinely great bucket-list experiences and worth the cost.
En Route — Lake Naivasha
📍 Lake Naivasha, Great Rift Valley
The Day 3 journey from Nairobi to Masai Mara stops at Lake Naivasha — the only freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley. Boat rides and a walking safari at Crescent Island (only accessible by boat) with giraffes, antelopes, hippos and birdlife. Optional at $50/person but genuinely worth it.

National Park Lodge
📍 Lake Nakuru National Park, Nakuru County
The final night of the safari, and a different kind of beauty: Lake Nakuru is famous for its flamingo populations (the lake turns pink at scale) and is home to rhinos, lions, and leopards alongside the flamingos. The lodge sits within the park boundary and the arrival itself — a game drive along the lake's edge — serves as a soft re-entry to what's been a remarkable five days. The morning departure allows for an early game drive before the road back to Nairobi.
Day 5 Highlight — En Route
The morning of Day 5 included a visit to a Masai village before leaving the Mara — one of the more genuinely moving parts of the trip. Dances, customs, traditions. Not performative in the way many such stops are; this one felt real.

Planning Your Kenya Safari
We went with Msanii Africa Safaris — tour leader Titus Mutua — and the operation was exceptional. Flawless logistics, great guide, genuine care throughout. For a trip of this nature with this many moving parts, using a specialist operator was the right call, without question.
Deposit 30% at least 3 months out
Msanii requires 30% deposit to confirm. Lodge capacity in Masai Mara is finite — don't leave this late. Online payment has no surcharge; card on arrival adds 3.5%.
Do the balloon safari
$390/person sounds steep. It is. But an hour over the Mara at dawn, landing for a champagne bush breakfast — this is one of the great experiences on earth. Requires pre-booking; briefing the day before.
Start at Diani — reverse the order
We went beach first, safari second. This works brilliantly — you arrive relaxed and ready, rather than arriving at a beach having just driven through the bush.
Full board matters in remote lodges
There are no restaurants outside the gate. Always choose full board for Mara and Nakuru — it's not just convenience, it's the only sensible option.
