📍 Koh Lanta, Krabi Province
Koh Lanta hits a sweet spot that fewer travellers find — big enough to have good restaurants and bikes to rent, small enough to feel genuinely unhurried. Moonlight Bay Resort is a relaxed property positioned well on the island's western coast. Sunsets here are serious, and the resort is honest about what it is: a comfortable, easygoing base rather than anything showpiece. We used it as a launching point for long days on the island and the ferry south.

A transit night between islands — practical rather than memorable. Clean, well-run, and served the purpose perfectly. The kind of stay that doesn't need to be remarkable to be exactly right.
Island Boutique Resort
📍 Koh Mook, Trang Province
Koh Mook is Thailand's best-kept secret in the Trang archipelago. Almost no package tourists, real fishing village atmosphere, and the Emerald Cave — a sea cave you swim through in darkness to emerge in a hidden lagoon — a short long-tail away. Mook Montra Resort is perfectly calibrated for the island: a beautiful, quiet, genuinely off-grid feeling property. No glossy overproduction. Just good design, clean rooms, and the ocean.
Koh Mook Don't-Miss
Tham Morakot is reached by swimming 80 metres through a sea cave in complete darkness — then emerging into a sunlit hidden lagoon with white sand beach and sheer karst walls overhead. Go early (before 10am) before day-trip boats arrive. A snorkel and some nerve is all you need.
Beachfront Bungalow Resort
📍 Koh Kradan, Trang Province
The final island, and the one that stayed with us longest. Koh Kradan has no roads, no ATMs, and very few visitors — which means the coral directly off the beach is extraordinary. Reef Resort places you on the sand — bungalows literally on the beach — and the snorkelling from your doorstep rivals dedicated dive sites. Sunsets from the west-facing beach are cinematic. This is the kind of place you extend your stay at without hesitation.
Bangkok Transit Night
📍 Don Mueang Airport, Bangkok
When the island trip ends and you're catching a morning flight, the Amari Don Muang is the correct answer. A skywalk connects directly to the terminal — you essentially live at the airport without the airport noise. Surprisingly good restaurant, proper beds, and the kind of transfer efficiency that makes island-hopping logistics manageable.

The Trang archipelago — Koh Lanta, Koh Mook, Koh Kradan — is the under-the-radar version of a southern Thailand trip. We did this route just ahead of the crowds discovering it properly. Here's what made it work.
Go south of Krabi
Koh Phi Phi and Koh Samui are overrun. The Trang islands are the version of Thailand that still has some magic intact. For now.
Book transfers before you arrive
Inter-island connections are long-tail boats with limited space. Miss the scheduled departure and you wait a day. Your resort can book these — do it on arrival.
Reef Resort is worth the extra night
Koh Kradan is the most beautiful island on the route. We'd have stayed two nights. The snorkelling is extraordinary and the sunsets earn their reputation.
End in Bangkok for the flight
Don Muang airport hotel is the right call. The skywalk connection and early check-in options mean you arrive rested. Worth the one night.
